SIXTH FLEET HEADLINE REPORT 8 JUNE 1967
1. AP AND UPI CARRIED STORIES ABOUT ATTACK ON USS LIBERTY (AGTR-5)
BY ISRAELI FORCES. INCIDENT TOOK PLACE ABOUT 0900 THIS MORNING,
APPROXIMATELY FIFTEEN MILES NORTH OF THE SINAI PENINSULA IN INTER-
NATIONAL WATERS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA. LIBERTY DEPARTED ROTA,
SPAIN, 2 JUNE 1967, AND ARRIVED AT HER POSITION THIS MORNING TO
ASSUME COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN U.S. GOVERNMENT POSTS IN THE MIDDLE
EAST AND TO ASSIST IN RELAYING INFORMATION CONCERNING THE
EVACUATION OF AMERICAN DEPENDENTS AND OTHER AMERICAN CITIZENS
FROM THE COUNTRIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST. U.S. GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN
INFORMED BY THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT THAT THE ATTACK WAS MADE IN
ERROR BY ISRAELI FORCES AND AN APOLOGY HAS BEEN RECEIVED FROM
TEL AVIV. INITIAL REPORTS OF CASUALTIES ARE FOUR DEAD AND 53
WOUNDED. LIBERTY IS STEAMING NORTH FROM THE AREA TO MEET U.S.
FORCES MOVING TO HER AID. SHE IS REPORTED IN NO DANGER OF SINKING.
