ABOARD THE CARRIER AMERICA IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, JUN 8 (AP) -- AN ASS-
OCIATEED PRESS REPORTER HEARD A RADIO TRANSMISSION INFORMING THE
CARRIER ABOUT 12:30 P.M., GMT, THAT "WE'VE BEEN HIT." PARA
IMMEDIATELY STRICT SECRECY WAS ENFORCED AND CERTAIN AREAS WHERE TOP
OFFICERS WERE WORKING WERE PLACED OFF-LIMITS TO NEWSMEN. PARA
THE CARRIER SWUNG INTO ACTION. DECK CREWS WERE ADVISED THAT AIR-
CRAFT THEN OUT ON FLIGHT MANEUVERS WERE BEING BROUGHT BACK IMM-
EDIATELY. THEY WERE NOT TOLD WHY, BUT SPEED IN CLEARING THE DECK
AND GETTING READY FOR RECOVERIES LANDINGS WAS STRESSED. PARA
BENEATH THE FLIGHT DECK, HANGAR CREWS WERE BREAKING OUT 500-POUND
BOMBS AND GAZTING EIGHT-FOOT BULLPUP AIR-TO-GROUND MISSILES READY FOR
LOADING UNDER THE PLANES. PARA
ABOVE DECK, LOWER-RANKED SAILORS WERE REMOVED FROM NEAR SECURITY AREAS.
