The Liberty Incident

CNO - Daily Briefing Notes

In June 1967 the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) was Admiral David L. McDonald, USN

Each morning, Admiral McDonald received a classified briefing based on prepared Daily Briefing Notes. The Naval Historical Center in the Washington Naval Yard maintains a file of these declassified briefing notes and portions of the notes from 6 June to 15 June have been copied, and can be viewed. The included pertinent notes and references to the USS Liberty incident as well as the Middle East Crisis therein are described below.

6 June (page 1 & 2). Concerns nothing on Liberty, however items 1 & 2 cover the Middle East Crisis. Note the general operating location of Task Force 60 (the aircraft carriers), 270 nautical miles from Israel.

7 June (page 1 & 2). Mention of Liberty in item 1 in addition to movement of Task Force 60 further to the west, away from the war zone. It has been stated by an individual who claims to have been present for this briefing that Admiral McDonald, in response to learning that Liberty was entering the war zone, “literally leaped out of his chair, let fly a salty expletive, and shot out of the briefing room.” (See Naval Institute Proceedings, August 2003, Discussion & Comments, pg. 20).

8 June (page 1 & 2). Mention of Liberty in item 1.

9 June (page 1 & 2). Mention of Liberty attack as item 1. Of interest regarding the Liberty report – If there were radio intercepts of the actual attack by the IAF (as claimed by some), why were they not mentioned? What is now known to be the EC-121 intercept is clearly indicated.

10 June (all 4 pages). Item 2 concerns the Liberty.

11 June (all 3 pages). Item 2 concerns the Liberty.

12 June (page 1 & 2). Item 2 concerns the Liberty.

13 June (page 2). There is no mention of Liberty.

14 June (page 1). There is no mention of Liberty.

15 June (page 2). There is no mention of Liberty.
